Let’s begin with a pertinent reminder that self-care is not selfish. As a new mum, there’s a surge in your responsibilities which can take a toll on your mental and physical well-being; and while it is common to consider your needs irrelevant, this does more harm than good in the long term.

Self-care is vital (read: non-negotiable) to keep your mind at ease and only improves your ability to nurture your little one.

Here are a few simple self-care tips you can follow because you are your top priority!

1. Eat well and keep hydrated

Try to eat at least one nourishing meal and don’t forget your five-a-day fruit and vegetables!

2. Sleep when the baby is asleep

Establishing a bedtime routine at the same time every night is a great way to encourage your baby to fall asleep like clockwork.

A good night’s sleep is important for both you and your baby.

3. Establish a morning routine

Wake up before your baby if you can and have some time to meditate, pray or do affirmations. Starting your day with affirmations can help empower you and put you in a positive mindset. You could try saying, “I am able, I am beautiful, I believe in me” and end it with “Today will be a great day”.

4. Look good, feel good

Looking good can help you to feel good. Brushing your hair or even putting on mascara goes a long way.

5. Exercise and fresh air

Exercise is good for your mental health and one of the best (and most convenient) forms of exercise is a regular morning (or evening) walk.

6. Sharing is caring

Looking after a child is a massive job so share responsibilities with your partner or another family member, whenever you can.

7. Make time for yourself

Take a long warm shower or bath (whichever you prefer) at least once a week. Just relax and enjoy your time and be present.

Remember mums, it is okay not to be okay. Seek help, talk to someone and give yourself little rewards throughout the week for all that you do. You are not alone, our community of experts and smart mums is here to support you and share information that you will need to make your journey as a new parent stress-free and joyous.
